Searching and Retrieving Digital Information

The unprecedented amount of user-generated and institution generated digital content is one of the main characteristics of the European knowledge society. The need for citizens to retrieve relevant, personalised, right-on-time information demands for tools that allow the handling of an ever-growing volume of audio-visual content.
Search engines play an important role in this respect. They can be considered as gateways to digital content and they form a new emerging market. The IPTS is studying how new search engines are being developed and marketed as a result of the increased creation, use and availability of digital content.
