Enterprise Search

Enterprise search technology retrieves data and information within organisations. This data can be proprietary and public, and access to it may be restricted or not. Enterprise search solutions render business processes more efficient particularly in data-intensive companies. Such technology is key to increasing the competitiveness of the digital economy; thus it constitutes a strategic market for the European Union. The IPTS studies the main trends and market dynamics of enterprise search and the roles of different stakeholders (providers of web search engines, enterprise resource management tools, pure enterprise search tools, etc.) in this changing context. Our main thesis is that enterprise search is currently (as of early 2010) placed at the point where two established markets, namely web search and the management of information systems, increasingly converge.
